Jean Irene (Stafford) Ashley was born on February 14, 1931, in Bloomington Springs, Tennessee, to Van D. Stafford (1907–1992) and Ethel (Biggs) Stafford (1909–1983).
She married Clifford Robert Ashley Jr. (1933–1991), and together they had twin daughters. Jean died on April 21, 2005, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, at the age of 74.
